One of the best tips that we have for taking care of your car engine this winter is to change the oil on schedule.  Dirty oil is no good for your engine at all times of the year, but it’s even worse for it in the winter.  Oil reduces the friction in your engine, so cleaning it frequently will reduce the chances of engine damage.  In the winter months, oil becomes more viscous.  We recommend having your oil changed before the weather gets too cold.  At JD’s Auto Repair, we recommend changing the kind of oil you use, too.  5W 30 is usually the recommended oil for winter engine car care.

Another tip for keeping your engine running great this winter is to check the coolant.  Engine coolant is used to prevent engines from overheating.  Unfortunately, it can become contaminated rather quickly.  At JD’s Auto Repair, we recommend that you have your car’s cooling system checked out before the dead of winter hits.  It’s important to check that your coolant system has a fifty-percent mixture of antifreeze, as well.

As you might imagine, an engine tune-up is also highly recommended.  You’ll want to make sure that you have the spark plugs, hoses and belts checked out.  It’s a good idea to have the air filter and the fluid levels checked, as well.  Another great way to care for your engine during the winter months is by allowing your car to warm up before driving it.  You can utilize a remote start to let it heat up while you’re inside, or simply let it idle for a few minutes before driving.
